This position is responsible for providing strategic direction for digital audience acquisition, engagement, re-engagement and reactivation to develop and maintain the marketing database utilized to fulfill delivery requirements of revenue generation programs. He/she will be the strategic leader of the audience lifecycle management.


This person must be prepared to manage a broad spectrum of responsibilities related to data management, vendor interactions, troubleshooting issues and opportunities, campaign tracking, and process optimization.


The Associate Director, Audience Development  must manage a broad spectrum of responsibilities for digital user acquisition and maintenance including development and management of budgets, integrated marketing plans and tactics, marketing automation, data management, process optimization, ROI reporting/analysis. This position will work directly with publishers, editors, marketers, marketing solutions, sales, and analysts throughout the organization to implement best practices on obtaining and nurturing the audience.




Budget and Strategy 

  • Collaborate with publishing group(s) to establish an annual audience plan and strategy for digital audience growth and acquisition.

  • Collaborate with brand leadership team to develop goals for digital audience universe. Develop and execute plan to achieve those goals on budget and on time.

  • Collaborate with group VPs to ensure acquisition costs are in line with lead generation program rates.

  • Work closely with Marketing Solutions to ensure best practices are applied to minimize database fatigue.


Audience Acquisition and Maintenance  

  • Identify new growth opportunities and best practices based on emerging digital trends, competitive business intelligence and consumer insight.

  • Move beyond standard demographics and utilize intelligence targeting via behavioral data.

  • Immerse themselves in their market to gain in-depth knowledge of the audience behavior and key audience trends. Share those findings on regular basis with sales, content, and leadership team.

  • Maintain and continue to develop highly engaged newsletter lists; monitor performance of newsletters and make recommendations on content that is driving traffic and what content is not. Develop newsletter circulation goals that meet the needs of sales, content and marketing teams; consider circulation numbers and percentage of known users with demographic data.

  • Responsible for developing creative organic and paid strategies/campaigns that drive user acquisition and support audience retention.

  • Work closely with editorial to implement acquisition tactics throughout online content.

  • For new product launches and major product repositioning, work with sales leadership to identify target audiences and goals. Create and implement action plans and launch budgets to meet those business goals.

  • Maintain and continue to develop highly engaged digital marketing databases.

  • Develop creative organic and paid strategies/campaigns that drive user acquisition and support audience retention.

  • Develop and maintain programmatic nurture, re-engagement and reactivation programs.

  • Monitor results and make recommendations on database attrition.


Analysis and Reporting: 

  • Create and maintain brand engagement reports that showcase a brand’s overall audience engagement and trends. Monitor and have knowledge of competitive brands’ audiences (overall audience, social, engagement metrics, data size) and bi-yearly competitive overview.

  • Work with sales and editorial staff as needed to conduct reader surveys to gather demographic and/or behavioral data. 

  • Provide quarterly updates on the state of the digital database to sales and editorial.

  • Provide monthly report on Omeda personalization ad units. Model data to optimize ad units.

  • Monitor attrition including promotional optouts and audience aging trends to further develop digital audience budget model.

  • Provide reports as needed on other acquisition tactics.

  • Monitor audience development integrated campaign performance metrics to identify use trends.


Essential Qualifications:

  • Proficient in MS-Office (especially Excel and Powerpoint)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Deep understanding of lead automation software and lead nurturing campaigns

  • Ability to think critically, deliver data insights that drive audience growth and support strategic priorities database applications and/or social media

  • Strategic Planning Leadership and supervisory skills Integrated marketing skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing or related field

  • 7+ years online/web related marketing experience

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work with all levels of the organization, including Directors, VPs and Publishers

  • Background in audience development, marketing, or promotion; financial/budgeting/ROI applications, audits; database applications and/or social media

  • Analytical skills, flexibility, team oriented, team player

  • Approximately 15% travel


Non-Essential Qualifications:

  • Experience with Email Service Providers such as Omeda

  • Solid value proposition copywriting skills

  • Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Acrobat PDF


Physical Requirements:

  • Sit and/or stand for long periods of time

  • Use of hands and fingers

  • Work on a computer 5-10 hours daily
